    As someone who did their primary teaching qualification from 1994-1997, I came in right at the end of the old English curriculum and at the beginning of the new one.

    I'm a proponent of a balanced and holistic approach to language. I believe that in order for a child to see how language is constructed, they need to see what the building blocks of language are. You can't build a house if you don't know the difference between a brick and a roof tile.

    I remember when I was in kindergarten we had these boards on which we could put little pieces of cardboard with words on them. This allowed us to construct language without the need to be able to write it ourselves.

    Children learn to speak in exactly the same way. They understand a lot more words than they are able to say. They get to know the chunks of language and then learn to put them together themselves to construct language.
